Erin, I loved your use of a concept map to outline the pros and cons of allowing chewing gum in school. Your pictures gave me a visual to think about the problem at hand. The problem that I have with students chewing gum is that they will stick it anywhere. It is proven through research that chewing gum helps students to focus. I think it would be okay to allow students to chew it in your classroom, but limits need to be set. I would apply the social learning theory by having the students work in groups to create a similar concept map stating where and when they should be allowed to chew gum, and when it is not appropriate or not needed. Then as a whole group, the class could create rules for chewing gum in class. Hopefully this will solve your problem!
